Southern Cross Station Overview

The Southern Cross railway station in Docklands is a major railway station in Melbourne. This iconic building was formerly known as Spencer Street Station, but it has since been renamed. ​

The station is a bustling hub of activity, with 16 platforms and 22 tracks.​ It has two concourses at Bourke and Collins Streets. Serving over 1.2 million people every week, Southern Cross Station is Victoria's primary metropolitan, regional and airport gateway.

The Southern Cross railway station was opened in 1859 was a dead-end terminus, running parallel to Spencer Street. Today's railway station is a modernized wonder that has been overhauled to meet all of its passengers' needs. It also features an impressive new design. The Lubetkin Prize winning Southern Cross Station reorganisation and expansion was the first project undertaken by Grimshaw in Australia.​ It is now a landmark of Melbourne's Central Business District.
